In a significant development preceding the scheduled consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22, all four Shankaracharyas, including Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati of Jyotir Mutt, have decided to abstain from the event. The decision follows a similar stance taken earlier by Swami Nischalananda Saraswati of Govardhana Peeth in Puri. Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, in a video posted on his X handle (formerly Twitter), emphasized that their choice is not rooted in any anti-Modi sentiment but rather stems from concerns regarding the violation of sacred Hindu scriptures or "shastras."

The primary objection raised by the religious leaders is the incomplete status of the temple construction, arguing that consecrating the idol in such a state goes against the prescribed rituals outlined in the shastras. Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati clarified that their decision is a duty to uphold shastra-vidhi, asserting that being labeled "anti-Modi" is a misinterpretation.

Meanwhile, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati of Govardhana Peeth had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with the involvement of political figures in the sacred event, particularly questioning the necessity of politicians, including Prime Minister Modi, participating in the physical installation of the Ram idol.
